"Teddy Yellow" c1925

This gorgeous and exceptionally rare Steiff "Teddy Yellow" has a wonderful expression and retains her FF button in ear. With original, soulful glass eyes and brown stitched nose/mouth and claws, she is such a pretty bear in good, strong condition. There is some wear to the mohair, balding to the arms and top of head and repairs to the pads. A few nose stitches are missing revealing the original brown under-felt. At the beginning of the 1920s, many companies were still suffering the effects of the First World War. Mohair remained in limited supply and other materials continued to be substituted in the production of teddy bears and soft toys. Manufacturers battled hard to regain prominence in the world market, resulting in many new and unusual teddy designs. This era certainly saw the launch of some very special creations from Steiff

In 1922, Richard Steiff, who had been responsible for the design of many products, suffered a heart attack and had to take things easy. He left his hometown of Geingen for a less stressful lifestyle in the USA with his wife and daughter, becoming less and less involved with the family business. In 1925, however, Richard Steiff wrote to his brother Paul from New York, telling him he felt the bears were looking rather drab in colour and needed cheering up with large silk ribbons. He believed the traditional Steiff products were no longer in favour within America and there was a need to adapt quickly to keep in touch with the market. Richard wanted more appealing softer bears with squeeze voice boxes, vibrant long mohair and kapok stuffing. This resulted in charming creations such as Teddy Rose and Teddy Yellow, both of which were also produiced as a clown bear with ruff and hat. Between 1925 and 1930 records show that 4,794 pink bears were sold, along with 5,271 yellow. These colourful beauties are extremely rare and collectable today.
