"Harriet" - Hecla c1906

Harriet is a gorgeous America Hecla bear dating 1906 who wears fabulous antique clothes that have belonged to her for many moons. The dress is now faded on the outside but fits her perfectly and comes with under-garments (please see the link photos)

Harriet is in lovely, original condition with rust coloured nose and claw stitching, glass eyes and the most endearing expression. She has worn her clothes for so long that the mohair has lightened on her paws and feet, there is some overall wear to the mohair but she remains in strong condition and is one of the nicest examples we have had in a long time! Harriet is filled with wood-wool and measures 14" tall

Hecla bears were made in around 1906 by a work-force believed to comprise of German immigrants living in New York. Numerous toy companies set themselves up across America at this time to compete with the well-established Germany toy-maker, Steiff. Hecla bears were made of the finest materials and, although the company failed to market itself effectively and ceased production within a couple of years, the quality of workmanship and rarity of their creations ensured a place in history and they are very much in demand today. A Hecla's main features include blonde or cream mohair, painted black glass eyes (or occasionally boot button eyes in the larger versions), a rust-coloured nose and wood-wool stuffing. The sizes ranged from just 8" to a huge 24" tall and it is very possible that a Hecla bear was used to advertise Teddy Bear Bread
