Hecla c1907 - Provenance

Hecla c1907 - Provenance
This fabulous American Helca was the beloved companion of Grace Koenig Todd and was given to her in 1907 when she was 10 years old. Grace kept her Hecla teddy bear for her entire life, passing him on to her Granddaughter, Jan Fitzgerald Northington in 1978. There is additional written provenance plus records of him being sent to a teddy bear collector in 2003 with correspondence from Jan. There is also a printed copy of a photograph showing Grace with her bear, a framed photograph of her as a child and numerous other print outs relating to her life.

Ted himself is in nice condition with original rust coloured nose/claws and mouth (one strand missing from mouth). He has card lined feet with original felt pads and paw pads recovered long ago. There is some overall wear to the mohair but he remains in strong condition and measures 17" tall

Hecla bears were made around 1906 by a work-force believed to comprise of German immigrants living in New York. Numerous toy companies set themselves up across America at this time to compete with the well-established Germany toy-maker, Steiff. Hecla bears were made of the finest materials and, although the company failed to market itself effectively and ceased production within a couple of years, the quality of workmanship and rarity of their creations ensured a place in history and they are very much in demand today. A Hecla's main features include blonde or cream mohair, painted black glass eyes (or occasionally boot button eyes in the larger versions), a rust-coloured nose and wood-wool stuffing. The sizes ranged from just 8" to a huge 24" tall and it is very possible that a Hecla bear was used to advertise Teddy Bear Bread
