Miller's Bear - Provenance

Miller's Bear - Provenance
This lovely rare early teddy bear was made by the American Miller Manufacturing Company and was owned by Kenneth Wiggins Porter (born in Kansas 1905). He was a prolific writer and poet, writing extensively about the Midwest of his youth and included with the bear is an article that he wrote about himself and other articles written about him. These articles were found thanks to extensive research by a previous owner. There is also a framed photograph of Kenneth with this very bear. On the back is another photo which says "Kenneth Wiggins Porter age 1 year February 17, 1906". There is a label also on the back which identifies the front photo as Kenneth W Porter and teddy bear in the heirloom room. Additionally there is a photo of Kenneth as an infant.

The Miller Manufacturing Company called these bears "antiseptic bears" but changed the description later on as it didn't prove to be a popular name! They offered this bear as: "insuring the utmost cleanliness or antiseptic" because the bears were made of wool plush and not mohair.

Ted is fully jointed with black stitched nose/mouth/claws. He has repairs to the felt pads and one pad is beautifully recovered. There is some overall wear to the worsted wool plush but he is in strong condition and filled with wood wool.

Kenneth Porter's bear measures just 10.5" tall
