Rare Harwin Bear c1916
|
We seldom have the pleasure of offering a British Harwin teddy bear dressed in original uniform and it is a pleasure to offer this exceptionally rare little chap for rehoming!
Harwin & Co was established in North London by G W Harwin in 1914. After the ban on the import of German goods, Harwin designed a series of "Ally" bears in 1916 dressed as mascots in uniforms of the Allied Forces of World War 1. Among these were a British Officer, a Sailor, a Red Cross Nurse and different soldiers. The company closed around 1930, affected by the post-War depression.
Teddy is dressed as a Highland soldier and even retains his sporran. Under the kilt he wears tartan dungarees which have wear but the whole uniform is there apart from the hat which is now missing. Ted is totally original with black stitched nose/mouth and boot button eyes. This lovely bear is offered in untouched condition with no restoration and he is still a strong teddy who is fully jointed and measures 11.5" tall. More photos available upon request.
