Charles Sackman c1907
|
So often in the past these bears were mistakenly identified as being manufactured by Ideal but we found evidence years ago that they were actually made by Charles Sackman of New York, thanks to extensive research by Fiona. Please see the bear at the bottom of "Other Bears" for more details showing the full patent number in the ear tag. This is just the second bear we have offered for sale who still has the ear tag remaining in place and he has been in a private collection for several years.
This gorgeous fellow dates c1907 and has original boot button eyes and black stitched nose/mouth/claws. He has a good covering of mohair with some general overall wear. Teddy is five way jointed and softly filled with wood wool. There is a non-working internal squeaker and he measures just 10" tall. It is so rare to find a Sackman with the ear tag in place as they were literally just stapled in to the ear - please enquire for more details
Charles Sackman's patent 844,619 was filed on 24th November 1906 and announced in the official Weekly Gazette of the US Patent Office on 19th February 1907. In his application, Sackman claims, "I have invented certain new and useful improvements in toy animals". One "invention" he claims as his own is the forming of depressions to create eye sockets enabling the buttons to be well-secured and simulating the "deep-set" appearance of real animals. In fact, Ideal bears of the era are also known for having deep-set eyes!
So many firms copied one another during the early years of teddy bear production, and it is interesting to see how this wonderful example possesses many characteristics of an Ideal bear. These bears were clearly put into production to compete with the more expensive rival companies.
