Rod-Jointed Elephant 1904

This beautiful rare c1904 early rod-jointed Steiff burlap elephant is in strong condition with overall wear commensurate with age. There are some darns to the trunk and holes in the felt tusks as well as a few other small holes (more photos on request). Such a rare old fellow who was purchased from Ladenburg auction in Germany almost 3 years ago. He is fully jointed and filled with wood wool. The lovely saddle cloth and head dress are later additions (but have a lot of age to them) and he measures 15" long. This elephant does not have a button in ear, but it is very likely he never actually had one as he is one of the first of his kind created by Steiff. The button-in-ear trademark swiftly became associated with Steiff products and was registered at the patent office on December 20th 1904 and legally confirmed in writing in May the following year.
