Silver Swan Vinaigrette 1903
|
Beautiful antique silver swan vinaigrette hallmarked London 1903 in lovely condition, measuring 1.5" long
Vinaigrettes were usually small boxes with a hinged lid, which would contain a sponge soaked in an oily sweet smelling substance. Used both by men and women, they were generally carried whilst travelling, to give a pleasant aroma as the streets could often smell. The earliest-known examples date from 1492. Such pieces were popular from the mid 18th century and were made in innumerable forms and styles (such as circular, oval, heart-shaped, and in fantasy forms, such as a shoe, purse, acorn or an animal).
