Antique Possum Pin Jar

Wonderful silver/glass possum pin jar by Arthur Johnson Smith hallmarked Birmingham 1909 (the year William Taft became president of the USA). It is in good condition with a small dent to the possum's back and the hallmark is fully visible. It measures 10.5cm x 3.4cm x 3.6cm (more photos on request) When William Taft took over the presidency from Theodore Roosevelt in 1909, manufacturers wanted something to replace the Teddy Bear. Taft was partial to possum pie so manufacturers were inspired to create Billy Possum believing it would take over the popularity of the teddy bear. But teddy bears had already made their way into people's hearts and the sales never dwindled so Billy Possum was very short-lived, hence the rarity of possum related items today Additional pics SOLD
